My name is Daw Myat Ngwe Thaung, a devout Buddhist living in Sitkaing Township, Mandalay Region. Words cannot fully express the sorrow and misfortune I have faced following the tragic loss of my beloved son.
On March 28, a powerful earthquake struck our region with devastating force. At the time, my son was playing in a body of water near our village. The quake caused panic and chaos—many people, including my son, were in the water and had no chance to escape. Despite all efforts, I have not been able to find him. I have lost my son forever. The pain of losing a child is beyond words. My heart remains heavy with grief.
The earthquake also caused serious damage to our home and surrounding buildings. During the collapse, my husband was critically injured. His right hand was broken, and he sustained a severe head injury. He is now in the hospital, and doctors have given us little hope. Even if he survives, they believe he may never fully recover and could be left permanently disabled. As a carpenter, his work was our main source of income, and without it, our financial situation is becoming increasingly desperate.
I used to sell potatoes and onions at the local bazaar to help support our family. But now, overcome by grief and the need to care for my injured husband, I can no longer continue. We are left relying on the kindness and support of others just to meet our basic needs.
This tragedy has shattered our lives. The loss of my son, my husband’s injuries, and the destruction of our home have left us in deep despair. Each day is a struggle to endure. I pray for strength, for relief from this suffering, and for the hope of better days ahead—even as we continue to face overwhelming hardship.
Sincerely,
Daw Myat Ngwe Thaung
